The thing about these books that saddens me the most is that people who have no idea how bdsm or dom/sub relationships ACTUALLY works, but have fetishized it and fantasized about it, are going to have these books as their introduction to it. And all I can see coming form that is a lot of women getting stuck in awful awful relationships but convincing themselves that it's 'romantic' because their boyfriend is as controlling as Edward or Christian. It's just so sad.

Keep fighting the good fight, Noel. The reviews keep getting better as the book keeps sucking worse and worse.

If you manage to get to chapter eight, a fun (or physically debilitating) drinking game is to take a shot every time someone "murmurs." You'll see what I mean. Thanks for the laughs.

Personally, I don't have a problem with fanfiction getting retooled and published as original work, so long as it doesn't violate copyright. And I have no problem paying for something that's available for free (during the 90s, it was customary for many Russian authors to post their work online in their entirety. Many still due. Never seemed to have hurt their sales all that that much).

Everyone she encounters at this massive company is perfectly fine with one person showing up for someone else’s appointment, without anything in the way of background checks or confirmation calls.

My first thought was to comment that you'd be amazed how far press credentials will get you (and how little people can care about checking). Then, I remembered that it was a college newspaper, and, in my experiences, their press passes aren't worth that much. So yeah... moving on.

I’ll say this, though: I’m enjoying Ana as a person more than I ever did Bella. She’s more interesting, more real.

I can't help but wonder if your reaction might have been different if you weren't comparing Stasiya to Bella. But then, personally, I don't think Bella had no personality - she had an awful, appallingly egocentric personality - but that's a whole other conversation.

@Mirajane Scarlet

The difference is that those other forms of adaptations and tie ins are officially licensed and done with the blessing and/or involvement of the creators, the people who actually own the original thing.

I personally don't have a problem with publishing fanfic as long as the elements that tie it to the original thing are altered and the focus is put on the original content the author added. Like if this had been published in the version that still kept Bella, Edward, and Jacob, no, I would not support that. But by changing those elements and letting the original take stand (mostly) on its own, I don't have a problem with that.

I don't know about this book in particular as I haven't read it, but personally, I love that people are writing fanfics and then turning them into books. If it's a good story, and I'm not saying this one is or isn't, I don't think it matters where it came from. I also find it kinda fun to read a fanfic and then read the original fiction version and see what's different.

As for people who have issues with this sort of stuff, I don't really get it. Remakes, comic book versions, sequels, prequels, video game adaptations, novelizations... people are fine with all of that, but something that started out as a fanfic, that's where they draw the line?

I could say that Ana's feelings are realistic up to a point, but not entirely. I've had moments in my life where I met someone who lived at the corner of Ridiculously Attractive and Total Jerkface, and it's easy to feel conflicted about that. But in my experience you might start off thinking "God what an ass. Pretty though" and then when you're away from him you forget about the former. BUT as soon as you see him again and he continues to be an ass, that revulsion should come back. Ana's being a little too naive to just toss that aside.

1) I found the whole thing pretty corny, but as I read further I began to grudgingly respect the author. She handles certain aspects in a thoughtful and interesting manner, which I won't spoil for you. And seeing you refer to it as tongue in cheek makes me realize that probably some of the parts I thought were silly were done so intentionally.

2) That said, I still can't really get over the absurdity of the whole fashion designer/chieftain thing. What, the character wasn't interesting enough without some absurdly unlikely and feminine career? And I'm still mad that all you need to pass as a scientist (among other scientists!) is bushy eyebrows and ugly clothes.

3) Going back to my grudging admiration of the author, I actually get a feeling that some of the more ridiculous romance tropes were forced onto her by the expectations of her editors and the conventions of the Silhouette Intimate Moments line that the book was released under. There are bits that are dropped suddenly and others that feel rather tacked on. But you haven't gotten there yet.

Anyway, excited to see what you make of the rest of it!

1) I found the whole thing pretty corny, but as I read further I began to grudgingly respect the author. She handles certain aspects in a thoughtful and interesting manner, which I won’t spoil for you. And seeing you refer to it as tongue in cheek makes me realize that probably some of the parts I thought were silly were done so intentionally.

2) That said, I still can’t really get over the absurdity of the whole fashion designer/chieftain thing.
When I saw the title, I was actually kind of hopeful. Cossacks have been a major part of Russian popular culture. As I said elsewhere, they are usually depicted as fiercely independent warriors and skillful horsemen who tend to live in the frontier. So the notion of pairing a Cossack and a cowboy was intriguing.

For a while, it looked like the story was going to be interesting, and it seemed like the writer actually did her homework (which is always welcome). But just as I was approaching the end of the recap - wham, tired romance novel trope resurfaces and suddenly, the novel doesn't seem so interesting anymore.

That said, I would probably read the recaps of the rest of the novel out of sheer morbid curiosity.

The only book I've ever thrown across the room in disgust was The Choirboys by Joseph Wambaugh. It's about the dirtiest, most corrupt cops in town, but it's played as a comedy where we're supposed to laugh at their antics. Like the scene where a cop talks a jumper into committing suicide. The bit that had me hurl it in fury was when they came across the fatal car wreck of a pair of newlyweds. While they cordoned off the scene, one cop picked up the severed head of the bride and started using it in practical jokes on passing motorists. I will never ever again read anything by Joseph Wambaugh.

Coming late into this game, I just wanted to point something out from the standpoint of someone who very much enjoys the *fantasy* of forcible seduction (which is the best of several bad phrases). Most of the people I've talked to who share the enjoyment of that fantasy (both men and women) have a very crystal clear understanding that
1) we're a little weird,
2) it's perfectly okay to have these fantasies,
3) it is COMPLETELY NOT EVER OKAY to act this way in Real Life (at least, not without some significant "Okay, honey, when you bust in the bedroom door, you have to be wearing the pirate hat or I'll think you are a burglar and SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE" kind of planning), and
4) this kind of fiction is not for kids (by which I mean teenagers and younger).

Let me repeat this last one; this kind of fiction was not written for kids, it doesn't have kids in mind, it shouldn't be read by kids, and if you are the kind of parent who just tosses these novels at your kids without vetting them first, you're at best a lazy parent and at worst an utter waste of otherwise breathable air.

This kind of fiction is a bit like a huge slice of chocolate cake. It's not terribly good for you, too much of it will make you sick, but if you like chocolate a little indulgence isn't going to hurt you. And trying to ram it down everyone else's throat is a pretty douchey thing to do at best, and actively criminal at worst.

For a prime literary example of this kind of thing, try Bertrice Small's work. She at least has the decency to pick a historically appropriate period, and her historical research is sound, which is better than average for the genre.

Reaper Man! I love the Death books. Hey, have I told you about the Australian Discworld convention that was on this last weekend?

Yes, I AM trying to distract everyone from the actual book being reviewed here. Because, DAMN. I can't even. I think everyone is in the same pose as you are there.

"(Also, by the way, one of her nipples is gone. This is apparently a plot point.)"
Really? It... really? What, does she now have negative magical powers? Is she a walking anti-magic field?

Well, in the book, he appears to see through her disguise and acts as if she's human. Until later, when it's his perspective, and he can't tell if she's dead, a robot, or just really good at acting when other people are in the room.

I honestly can't tell if that makes it better or not?

....well, I suppose robots don't need scrotums....

I got nothing.

He bites her ankle? I suppose that's one way to find out you have a real live girl, rather than the lovebot you were expecting...

(Although, since I can't shut the hell about the rapey in my reviews either, I will say that from your synopsis, Mark (WHY IS THERE FAKE ROMAN NAMES) is expecting a lovebot, which he doesn't need consent from so from his POV, this is probably not rape, and I'm not sure what Mayflower is up to or why she's pretending to be a lovebot- doesn't look like we've gotten that far yet, what with the scrotums and all...)

(also, kindle for keeping people from knowing what you're reading. True fax.)

(And Kayleigh is mean. How do we get on the list to suggest books to you?)

So many unanswered questions! Do they go back to days of yore? Do the characters ever get justice on whoever torched the pseudo-farm? Does Angela ever get a clue & Magus to vike off? Or does Grandma Rose get her Viking-Italian baby quota met? These are the questions that will keep me up at night!

All that aside, it was a great review and I may have laughed till I snorted. I hope there are more, and will wait with baited breath over the months to come. Thanks for taking one for us, the internets!

I have to say, I really enjoyed reading through all of your "Virile Viking" review today (I almost wrote "plowing through" but then I physically recoiled from my computer, because all thought of farming makes me want to cry now, haha).
Oh thank god you made it to the end.

I know I've said it before, but I HATE this sub-sub-genre.

(And as a SCAdian, well, whatever Sandra Hill needs to get off her chest is better than some recent crap I've read. And uh, well, in some cases, Hill is not exactly wrong.)

Demotivational poster is aweosome.

WHAT IS WITH ALL THE PLOWING METAPHORS. It does not sound sexy. Turnips are not sexy. The word "harrow" is definitely not sexy.

...I just had a horrible thought. The Straw Feminist isn't going to get some sort of comeuppance, is she? The best-case scenario I can think of is her maybe falling for one of Magnus's sons and them being all "LOL YOU NO CAN HAS" and everyone laughing at her, but it could easily be so much worse in this book.

Hon, the fact that you had such a visceral reaction to that scene makes me proud of both you and of today's men. In your case you probably learned a lot from your female role models, but maybe this means the NO MEANS NO assemblies and the Take Back the Night walks are accomplishing *something*. I had always thought that things like that were kind of useless -- ok, we get it, rape is bad -- but from your historical examples, I guess at some point we as a culture needed to be told. I don't know. Anyway.

Not to say that the forceful seduction thing isn't disturbing -- it is -- but I think some of the reviews of Old Skool Romance from over on Smart Bitches, Trashy Books would be useful to you, for perspective. Specifically, this one.
It's a weird fantasy to have even if you never want it to really happen I think. Though this is coming from someone who has had men deem it ok to come and stalk me and/or come "save me" at moments when mental disorders were taking their toll.
To me this type, fictional or real, is just predatory. When you are actually with someone like that you feel less human and more like well... game. So even if it is a blanket scolding I definitely would encourage women to get off more on a guy being so crazy about them they try to make them happy and respect them at every turn than getting off on the thought of the matter in bodice ripper books. (Which I've been lent before and have in turn been horrified by before.)

You sir are much more diplomatic than I.
(Looking forward to continued funny though.)
